Trailer Insurance for our hire trailers
Hire trailers are the responsibility of the hirer whilst they are in your custody, as per our terms and conditions.
For the purposes of the Road Traffic Act your motor insurer should be advised that you intend to tow a trailer. Whilst most comprehensive policies will automatically provide cover for towing, it is worth checking. Your motor insurance should cover damage to third party property and vehicles should the trailer be involved in a collision and it should also cover damage to the trailer as well - please check with your motor insurer.
We strongly recommend that you insure the trailer while you are hiring it for when it is being stored and not being towed. Once unhitched from your vehicle a separate insurance policy is needed. Should it go missing or be damaged beyond repair while in your custody then you will be held fully liable for the cost of the trailer which could be an expensive payout. Trailers are not cheap to replace so you will understand that as this is our livelihood, we cannot afford to be out of pocket and losing our income. We have already had a trailer stolen from one of our hirers and they are now responsible for the full value of it. Insurance will mean you wont have to pay this out of your own pocket should it be stolen or damaged beyond repair. Always make sure the policy covers you for damage, fire and theft for the duration of your hire term.
We include a flyer in your hire contract for the Insurance Emporium, but of course you are free to shop around and find your own insurer. If you already have horse insurance, then your insurer may be able to include the trailer on your policy.
The value of your hire trailer is written on the front of your hire contract and you should ask your insurer to insure it for this amount.
The trailer serial number and chassis code are also written on your contract and these should also be given to the insurance company to help accurately identify it. Please ensure these are correctly supplied to the insurer to avoid any discrepancies.
